Do you have User Selection for output format turned on If you have, change it back to HTML and see if you can delete the defined field then.

I believe this is a known defect. Ive run into it too. I just tried it in 8207 and it seems to be fixed.

Sometimes Im working in InfoAssist and decide that I dont need some define fields I created, so I want to delete them, but IA wont let me. The error message says the field is in use, but I checked everything and the only place the field is being used is in the define!! Is there a trick I tried saving the report after I deleted them from being used. I tried exiting the report and opening it back up in the editor. Neither worked.

Is that just how IA is (Version 8.2.03)

Just for clarification: a DEFINE field cannot be deleted from within IA IF its used within the query being used within that IA report/chart.

It CAN BE Deleted after its removed from that query.

Right. Thanks for adding that clarification for those who might stumble on this post later on.

In my case, it was removed from the query, but the version Im running (8.2.03) wouldnt let me delete it because I had User Selection turned on.
