John Edwards 2
Sure would be useful if you can. Has anybody done this
John Edwards 2
You know, let me define the real issue further We want to put the same Define fields on about half a dozen different master files. These are related views that each take a different slice of the same core data. An INCLUDE would do the trick if it works, but it may be theres a better way to do it by including the common defines as an added segment onto each of the master files. That is, one place to configure the Define fields for all the masters. Our source is relational, flat as a board. So there isnt a hierarchy in the existing master files. John Gelona
I doubt it will work in the actual .mas. Have you tried using a master file profile
John Edwards 2
I have not. Whats a master file profile
John Gelona
Put simply, it is a file that is linked to the .mas file that contains just about any valid FOCUS code. It is executed everytime the master is referenced. If you have App Studio, go into Help and type Master File Profile
Debra Waybright
There was a FOCUS Friday where Walter talked about setting up and using master file profiles, but I cant remember how to find past webinars.
John Edwards 2
Well thanks for the word. It sounds like a Master File Profile is an INCLUDE in a master file! Heres hoping it runs at the end and not at the beginning! Ill check it out. Thank you all for taking the time to tune in. I appreciate the help. John Gelona
It is run as part of parsing the .mas file. So when you do TABLE FILE CAR, if you create a master file profile for the CAR file, it is run before any record retrieval
John Edwards 2
Thanks. Can I reference fields that are in the master file in the master file profile
John Gelona
As far as I know you can put any legal code in the profile. Did you look at the help in App Studio I would think it would also be in the Describing Data manual.
David Beagan
The solution I posted here employs a Master File Profile. Maybe that would help get the idea. Also has a link to doc.
